Quality Reporting for Two Different Turning Operations
The following data sets are extracted from two different lathes, with each performing a turning processes for steel shaft production. The readings are taken directly from a micrometer, and should be 0.258 inches with an acceptable tolerance of +/- 0.005. The diameters are measured per subgroup, and the goal is to be able to see if both processes are capable of their operation by performing both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

The results are as follows:

Without using statistical analysis, the N-5 process originally appears more capable due to the appearance of its distribution in the frequency chart; but upon closer investigation, both processes have outliers from normal distribution and there are many data point outside the specified limits, marked by the blue and purple lines.

N-7 Turning Operation
Despite the Grouped Data Analysis, further investigation shows that the N-7 process has capability potential due to the trend in its average values and process capability calculation. The N-5 process, on the other hand, shows no signs of possible assignable causes that, when addressed, would lead to overall improvement.
