Lean Process Management: Short Term Scheduling
Using the Johnson’s Rule it is possible to determine the best sequence, costing the minimum amount of time according to the available machines and jobs that need to be done. The only necessary pieces of information needed to start this process are the hours required for each job according to the operation, the different operations that need to be scheduled, and of course the different jobs the operations require. This information is normally collected by a quality engineer, operations engineer, or someone similar.

This information can then be plotted in a Gantt chart format, thus acting as a visual display for the most optimum process according to the given data. This process minimizes the number of idle hours and assures that the job, including all the different operations needed to complete the job, is done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
