Quality Reporting for Diameter Readings From a Specialized Manufacturing Process
The following data set includes actual diameter readings taken from a MM micrometer from a manufacturing process of aluminum shafts. There are 25 subgroups, with 4 diameter readings per subgroup. Grouped data analysis of all of the readings was performed to assure normal distribution. Once normal distribution was confirmed, Cp calculations were done to see if the rough analyzation of the data suggested a capable process.

After conducting grouped data analysis, control charts were generated to get a more holistic look and detailed view on whether or not the process was capable or not. This part of the analysis also helps to bring forth any assignable causes that might exist within the process. Assignable causes are visible in the form of outlying data points on the process control charts.
The trend of the assignable causes often points to the actual issue within the process. In this data set, the random assignable causes seen in this data set most likely point to human error within the manufacturing process. A good knowledge of these data points and their potential causes allows them to be addressed in a timely manner to ensure the manufacturing process can continue to run smoothly.
